The start of the 2023-24 school year for Salem Keizer Public Schools is fast approaching, with sixth and ninth graders beginning Sept. 5, and all other non-kindergarteners on Sept. 6. The district and new Superintendent Andrea Castañeda are ready with their top priority “a great opening.”

In an online letter to families published Thursday morning, Erik Jespersen informed the McNary community that he had accepted a role with Salem Keizer School District and would not be returning as principal at McNary High School.

Tuesday’s Salem-Keizer Public Schools School Board meeting featured new faces and new roles as newly elected board directors were sworn-in and leadership was voted on.

The Salem-Keizer Education Association (SKEA), which represents the contracted educators in SKPS schools, sent a letter to the district on March 3 expressing concern for the safety of its members and the lack of preparation and training for dealing with violent students.

With talk about bringing SROs back to campus growing, SKPS introduced the Safe and Welcoming School Committee to examine what is needed for both physical and psychological safety of students.
