McNary boys cross country take first in conference meet

McNary boys cross country came away with another overall top finish in a league meet at Wednesday’s Central Valley Conference District Preview at Oak Knoll Golf Course.

The district preview is the same course where the district championship meet will take place, and the Celts will hope to repeat this week’s result after narrowly edging out West Salem 35-38 to take first place.

Senior Cain Duncan had the top-time for the Celts and finished second at 16 minutes, 8.63 seconds, the fourth fastest time in McNary history.

Yosef Picazo set a McNary sophomore record with a time of 16:38.18, finishing fifth.

The McNary boys’ sixth runner finished four spots ahead of West Salem’s fifth, as McNary had six of the top 13 finishes.

“I am very impressed by this group and I still believe the best is yet to come,” head coach Josh Christensen said.

After two conference meets, the McNary varsity boys are 8-0.

The JV boys have matched that 8-0 mark of the varsity.

The varsity girls finished third behind West Salem and South Salem, with Kailynn Bollman-Lechner finishing fifth with a personal best time of 20:05.89.

“Kailyn put herself in the lead pack from the gun and refused to be dropped,” Christensen said. “She ran with an extraordinary amount of grit and it resulted in a lifetime best by over 70 seconds.”

The varsity girls are tied for second in the conference with South Salem at 5-3.

There is one more conference meet on Oct. 18 before the district championship on Oct. 25.
