A man trying to cash a forged check at Willamette Valley Bank in Keizer on Tuesday, March 17, was instead arrested for cashing or attempting to cash more than $10,000 in checks, according to Keizer police.
According to a police affidavit, a bank employee reported to police that a man was in the drive-thru attempting to cash a $2,300 check.
The man had deposited checks made out to himself for $2,000, $5,000 and $2,323, the affidavit said.
The victim with the bank account on which the checks had been written told police he had ordered more checks but never received them.
The suspect told police that a friend left the binder of checks in his car and that he “found the checks with his name on them.”
Lucan Hargraves Jr., 28, of Salem, was arrested for aggravated identity theft, theft of mail and forgery.
Jamie M. Hancock, 34 a transient accompanying Hargraves, was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Linn County, police reported.
•In other police activity, an employee at the Keizer McDonald’s reported an apparent drunk driver in the restaurant’s drive-thru lane just before midnight on Monday, March 16.
Lt. Trevor Wenning of the Keizer Police Department said the driver “was uncooperative and would not follow direction.” He said that as the driver was being handcuffed “he resisted by pushing the officers away.”
Police got a warrant to draw the driver’s blood at Salem Hospital. There, the driver “spat on the officer numerous times and interfered with hospital staff by being loud and out of control which required hospital security to intervene and help the officer.”
