Students from Kennedy Elementary School took to the stage recently to perform traditional Mexican songs and dances.
Families filmed and cheered from the audience at Claggett Creek Middle School during the event on Friday, May 29. It was the school’s third multicultural night, organized by its dual language teachers.
The dual language program teaches in both English and Spanish, and includes students who are native Spanish speakers and those who are not. The event involved one performance from each of the school’s five dual language classes, and one all-class performance.
“At Kennedy, we celebrate such a rich diversity that we’re so proud of,” Principal Kelsey Harris said. “It’s an honor to acknowledge and celebrate the language and culture that’s represented at our school.”
Students sang Mexican folk songs such as “Cielito Lindo,” and performed dances including the “Pávido Návido.” A presentation slide described the dance as a “vibrant, upbeat regional Mexican folk dance.”
After the performances, attendees sampled food that Harris said was brought by families.
