McNary boys soccer traveled to David Douglas High School in Portland Wednesday and came home with a shutout win, and the top ranking in the state.
The 2-0 win against David Douglas (2-1-1) was the first clean slate this season from McNary (3-0) and junior goal keeper Emerson Carella. Following the win, the Celtics became the OSAA No.1 ranked team.
The game was scoreless until 10 minutes into the second half when freshman Fernando Zepeda cashed in a header off a corner kick set up by sophomore Jonathan Ruiz. It was Zepeda’s first varsity goal.
Senior Hudson Brunk later scored on a rebound to give the Celtics a two goal cushion. The David Douglas keeper was unable to clear a deep ball, and Ruiz struck from 30 yards out, hitting the crossbar. The ball caromed high and straight to Brunk, who put it in with his right foot as the ball came down.
McNary is currently one of four teams in 6A with an unblemished record, along with No. 3 Lincoln (4-0), No. 5 Grants Pass and No. 13 Century (4-0).
The next time on the pitch for the Celtics is Friday night when they host Newberg (1-1-1) at 7 p.m.
