One of Keizer’s original councilors and a volunteer whose service to the city dates back well before then will be honored with his own special day in September.
Phil Bay, whose jovial presence, eager friendliness and bottomless desire to help others will be honored every September 10 as Phil Bay Day within the city of Keizer.
“Phil Bay is a lamb with the heart of a lion,” said Councilor Dan Kohler in helping recognize Bay’s lifetime achievements.
Bay served on the city council from 1983 to 1991 and helped organize city services ranging from water and police to setting policies that still guide the city.
“I appreciate you, I am inspired by you and thank you,” said Councilor Roland Herrera.
He was also a founding member of the Keizer Heritage Foundation board, a founding member of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce and instrumental in moving the original Keizer schoolhouse from the intersection of Chemawa and River Road to its current home alongside the Keizer Civic Center.
Brandon Bay, Bay’s son and a former city councilor as well, thanked the council and his father.
“I’ve always looked up to you, Dad, and you brought volunteerism into our family,” Brandon said.
