As dozens of cherry blossoms bloomed under a clear, warm Saturday sky, hundreds gathered at the Oregon State Capitol for the Cherry Blossom Day Festival, an annual springtime celebration of Japanese culture here in the Pacific Northwest.

Knowledge helps us throughout our day and, depending on how much of it we have, it can greatly affect our course through life. Civic awareness and maintaining it represents a way to gain more knowledge that, when put into use, can change the direction or goals of a city.

With a recent gun violence related that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Jose Manuel Vasquez Valenzuela and the injury of 16-year-old Roberto Muñoz-Soto and 15-year-old Damien Esquivel-Soto, still under investigation, Salem-Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) will be displaying two weapon detection systems at Stephens Middle School on March 22, from 1-7 p.m.

In front of family, friends, the Keizer City Council and Keizer Police Department, Keizer Police Officer Paul Quintero was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on March 18, in the Keizer City Council Chambers.

In an early February executive session meeting, members of the Oregon Ethics Commission determined that the complaints against current city councilor Kyle Juran warranted an investigation, which is currently underway.

The Keizer City Council and Community Diversity Engagement Committee (CDEC) came together in the council chambers on Monday, March 11 to discuss the current direction and directives of the committee for 2024.
