Mavericks League Recap: (June 17-20)

Thursday, June 17: Campesinos 3 Mavericks 2 (Game 1)

Trevor Morrison hit a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Campesinos the 3-2 win over the Mavericks.

Pitchers Garrett Alvarez for the Mavericks and Colby Neely for the Campesinos each gave up just one earned run over seven innings of work.

The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a solo homer from Matt Holiday, but the Campesinos tied the game in the fifth thanks to an RBI-single by Aramis Cruz.

Holiday had another RBI in the top of the eighth as he knocked in Danny Alvarado after grounding into a fielder’s choice. But in the bottom half of the frame, Collin Runge brought home Jeff Chandler with a sacrifice fly before Rick Phillips scored on Morrison’s game-winning hit.

Thursday, June 17: Campesinos 8 Mavericks 3 (Game 2)

Rick Phillips and Jeff Chandler had three RBIs apiece, leading the Campesinos to an 8-3 win over the Mavericks in game two of the doubleheader.

The Mavericks went on top 3-0 in the top of the second after an RBI-groundout from Parker Swindell and a two-run double by Kyle McCormick. The Campesinos answered back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-single by Trevor Morrison.

In the bottom of the fifth, Chandler launched a three-run shot to give the Campesinos their first lead. Phillips soon followed with an RBI-double to extend the lead to 5-3.

Phillips would also have a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open.

Friday, June 18: Senators 6 Volcanoes 4 (Game 2)

After losing game one of their doubleheader, the Senators bounced back to win game two by a score of 6-4. Xavier Ulrich went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Senators and Matt Dunaway got the win on the bump, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven in five innings of work.

The Volcanoes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom after Garrett Kueber scored on an error by Volcanoes second baseman Humberto Soto.

In the top of the second, Ulrich hit a two-run double and was later brought home on an RBI-single Jordan Myrow, putting the Senators on top 3-1.

The Volcanoes tied the game in the bottom of the second on RBIs by Dominique Lincoln and Soto. But the Senators retook the lead in the top of the third on a pair of RBI hits from Edgar Vela and Angeddy Almanzar, making the score 5-3 in favor of the Senators.

The Volcanoes got within one after scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. But the Senators got an insurance run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Meyer.

Dustin Hamilton got the six-out save for the Senators and retired all six hitters he faced.

Saturday, June 19: Volcanoes 12 Mavericks 6

Nick DiBenedetto and CJ Epperson each had three RBIs as the Volcanoes defeated the Mavericks 12-6. Leomar Jimenez went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs for the Mavericks.

Evan Brisentine was the winning pitcher for the Volcanoes, going 6.2 innings and striking out nine while giving up three earned runs on nine hits

Brisentine got the benefit of working with a substantial lead for most of the game as the Volcanoes scored seven runs in the top of the second inning. The Volcanoes only had one hit in the frame but took advantage of two errors and six free passes from the Mavericks.

Saturday, June 19: Campesinos 17 Senators 8

The Campesinos exploded for 17 runs on 17 hits in their nine-run win over the Senators. Trevor Morrison was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBIs and Collin Runge went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBIs for the Campesinos in the victory. Xavier Ulrich and Edgar Vela each had two RBIs for the Senators.

The Campesinos scored three runs in the top of the second thanks to a pair of RBI hits by Runge and Eric Whitfield. But the Senators answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second.

However, the Campesinos scored three in the third inning and three in the fourth inning — Morrison had RBI-doubles in both frames — to give themselves a 9-3 lead.

Morrison would hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to extend the Campesinos lead to 17-8.

Sunday, June 20: Mavericks 2 Senators 0

Mavericks pitcher Ethan Roseback threw a complete-game shutout as the Mavericks defeated the Senators 2-0. Roseback gave up just four hits, struck out nine and only walked one in his brilliant performance.

Despite being the losing pitcher, Senators starter Carson Olson also had a quality start, throwing 6.2 innings and giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

After a scoreless three innings, the Mavericks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Leomar Jimenez hit a two-out triple to left center field and scored on an RBI-single by Alex Emerson.

The Mavericks got their other run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Parker Swindell.

The Senators had a runner in scoring position on three different occasions, but weren’t able to take advantage.

Sunday, June 20: Campesinos 7 Volcanoes 6

The Campesinos completed their undefeated weekend by beating the Volcanoes 7-6. Patrick Chung had the go-ahead RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth to put the Campesinos over the edge.

Eli Fultz was the winning pitcher for the Campesinos, giving up three hits and no earned runs over five innings.

Collin Runge gave the Campesinos the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single. In the top of the sixth, the Volcanoes would tie the game on an RBI-hit by Gabriel Cotto.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the Campesinos went off for five runs to take a 6-1 lead. Eric Whitfield knocked in a pair with a single, which was followed by an RBI-single by Aramis Cruz. Later in the frame, Fernando Rosales hit a two-run homer over the wall to give the Campesinos the five-run advantage.

The Volcanoes, however, responded with five runs of their own in the top of the seventh — three of which came on RBI-walks.

But in the bottom of the eighth, Chung delivered a clutch RBI-single to give his team the lead back.

Luke Laurita came on to get the save for the Campesinos in the ninth after retiring the side in order.
