Keizer woman celebrates 100th birthday

Lois Mangers, who turned 100 on Thursday, Oct. 16, has advice for younger generations.

“Just live your life, be honest, and be true,” she said. “And cherish your friends.”

She celebrated her landmark birthday at the Avamere Court at Keizer, surrounded by family, friends, and plenty of cake. At least 30 people attended the party.

“I just feel great,” Mangers said. “I’m so happy to be here with all my friends.”

Mangers was born in 1925 and grew up in Nebraska. According to her daughter, Jane Mangers, Lois Mangers told her parents that she was staying in Oregon for good after honeymooning in the Beaver State in 1946.

Mangers raised five kids while her husband, Robert Mangers, worked in the automobile industry. Mangers sold her home in east Salem and moved into the Avamere Court at Keizer in 2015.

Jane Mangers said her mother is always positive and energetic. Her favorite memory with her mother was vacationing in Mazatlán, Mexico, where the family owned a beach house.

Mangers has a 98-year-old brother and two aunts who lived to over 100.

What is Mangers’ secret to old age?

“She has a bourbon every night, wine with dinner, sleeps in and exercises every day, and walks at least a mile a day,” Jane Mangers said.
