A retired state government executive walking home from the Keizer Elks lodge died Saturday, April 11, after he was struck by a vehicle, Keizer police reported.
Donald A. Altermatt, 61, was attempting to cross River Road at Manbrin Drive when the accident occurred at about 10 p.m. He died later that night at Salem Hospital.
Police said Altermatt was crossing at the intersection when he was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by a Salem resident going through a green light. The driver, not identified by police, cooperated with the investigation and no charges are expected, police said.
Altermatt, who lived about three blocks from the Elks lodge, retired in August 2024 after serving as the information services manager for the state Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. He had worked for the agency since 1996. The agency trains and certifies police and corrections officers and firefighters.
The traffic fatality is the first in Keizer since last September.
Michael Sanchez, 28, was killed Sept. 17 after he was struck by a car as he walked along Northeast Trail Avenue.
Jeanette Carbajal, 33, of Keizer, was later charged with failing to perform the duties of a driver to an injured person.
Marion County Circuit Court records show she was scheduled to appear on Wednesday, April 15, for what was listed as a plea and sentencing proceeding.
• In other police activity, a transient was arrested and accused of burglarizing the REI store at Keizer Station on Thursday, April 9.
According to police, security agents saw a burglar at about 5:30 a.m. on surveillance equipment. The burglar broke through sheet rock walling and took several hundred dollars worth of clothing.
Jacob A. Kenneston, 37, was arrested nearby and subsequently charged in Marion County Circuit Court with second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief.
