Keizer Library expands reach with home delivery program

Starting in February, Keizer residents may not need to come to the library in-person to check out a book.

The Keizer Community Library is beginning a free program to deliver any library item, including books, DVDs and audiobooks, to a resident’s home on the first Saturday of each month. Items can be picked up the following month for return.

Emily Stockdale, library manager, said the goal of the program is to provide library services to those who are unable to physically come to the library due to illness, disability or other reason. She hopes to reach people who may otherwise be unable to use library services.

“There are many, many reasons why someone might not be able to physically come to the library, but the library is for everyone. It’s for the whole community,” Stockdale said. “So if someone can’t come to the library physically, I think it’s important to be able to bring resources to them.”

Home deliveries can be made for a few months, or on an ongoing basis.

The library delivers books to preschools, which Stockdale said helps get children excited about reading. However, Stockdale believes other residents can benefit from a home delivery program.

To participate, residents can call the library or email Stockdale at [email protected] to register. After that, participants can search the library catalog online and put desired items on hold.

If someone can’t access the digital catalog, Stockdale said she can help them compile a list of items for delivery.

While the program is limited to those living within Keizer’s city limits and requires a library card, Stockdale said the library aims to minimize barriers for participation.

In the beginning, Stockdale will make the deliveries and make pick-ups herself. Other volunteers will be trained and added to the program as needed.

Stockdale said the program is planned to be ongoing. The primary reason the program would be discontinued is lack of interest.

“But for me, personally, even if only one person wanted these deliveries, that would be enough for me to want to continue the program,” Stockdale said.
