Janette Stewart

On Wednesday March 25, 2020, Janette Marie (Stratton) Stewart passed to her heavenly home at age 94.

Janette was born on August 28, 1925 in Brownsville, Ore. to Byron Elmore Stratton and Vida Marie (Miller) Stratton. She graduated from Salem High School in 1943.

Janette was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, her brother Allen, and her grandson Dan. She is survived by daughters Janis, Rebecca and Barbara; grandchildren James, Jim, Cris, Cisco, Armando, Jesse and Tracy; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Janette was an award-winning correspondent for the Oregon Statesman newspaper, an Allstate Insurance industrial editor for a five-state region and a freelance writer who appeared in Oregon Coast, Redbook, Discover Magazine, as well as the Statesman-Journal, Keizertimes, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the San Francisco Chronicle and other publications.

She was a long time volunteer at Silver Falls State Park as a park host, lodge receptionist, and nature walk leader. She developed a study and brochure for the Calypso Orchid and edited the Trail’s End newsletter. She twice served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Silver Falls and she received the top volunteer award in 1994.

Janette served two terms on the Board of Directors, edited the monthly bulletin and staged fund raising programs for the Keizer/Salem Senior Center over an 18-year span.

Janette loved music, tapped her toes and clapped her hands to great barbershop and a capella music. She also sang with two barbershop choruses in the Salem-Keizer area.

She considered her family one of her greatest accomplishments, and loved them all.

Janette especially enjoyed the support of her granddaughter Cris, who provided loving nursing care during the last few years of her life.

A private burial will be held next week. A celebration of life will be announced at a future date.

Funeral arrangements were by Restlawn Funeral Home.
