State police chase armed man through Keizer neighborhood

A Keizer man wanted by police eluded an Oregon State Police trooper during a foot chase in Keizer on Sunday, June 14, and later surrendered after a standoff at a West Salem home, according to court records.

Jose Sanchez-Jaimes, 30, is being held without bail in the Marion County Jail after he was indicted for first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and third-degree escape.

According to court records, Trooper Matthew Bass was helping Keizer police officers locate Sanchez-Jaimes to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

He was convicted in 2021 of DUII and twice in 2024 – once for eluding police and once for failing to perform the duties of a driver after colliding with a parked vehicle in Keizer.

A Marion County probation deputy reported in March 2026 that Sanchez-Jaimes was suspected of eluding police again.

“Sanchez has yet to complete the Victim’s Impact Panel, substance abuse treatment, traffic school, and has not completed any community service hours,” his report said.

Trooper Matthew Bass said in an affidavit that he joined Keizer police in searching for Sanchez-Jaimes. He said that at about 9:30 a.m.. he encountered the man on Northeast Linda Avenue, a dead end street off River Road.

Bass said when he got out of his patrol car, Sanchez-Jaimes ran.

“I noticed during [the] chase, he lifted the front of his shirt, reaching for his waist band,” Bass wrote. “I recognized that movement commonly associated with individuals reaching for a weapon. I saw Jose retrieve a black item from his waistband and hold it in his right hand.”

At one point during the pursuit, the suspect “started to swing his right arm back towards my direction.”

The man then jumped a fence, Bass said.

Sanchez-Jaimes is listed as living at an address on Northeast Clark Avenue, east of Linda Avenue.

Bass said he found a loaded handgun that he said the suspect threw as he went over the fence.

He wrote that other troopers and Salem police officers stopped a vehicle driven by a relative of Sanchez-Jaimes. The driver said she dropped off the suspect at a home on Northwest Orchard Heights Drive in Salem.

State police later reported that Sanchez-Jaimes was at the home of an acquaintance and initially refused to surrender. A State Police SWAT unit arrived at about 11:30 a.m. and the suspect surrendered about four hours later, the agency reported.
