Judge dismisses Marion County’s lawsuit over ICE subpoenas

The lawsuit, filed in Marion County Circuit Court on Feb. 3, seeks $500,000 in noneconomic damages, $350,000 for future lost earnings and $39,889 for medical expenses.

As Cherriots moves toward imposing a new payroll tax, current and past chamber leaders say the bus district hasn’t done enough to involve business leaders on its board or seek community input. Transit leaders disagree. The Keizer City Council is scheduled to discuss and possibly oppose the tax on Monday, Aug. 18.

In a tense meeting, Cherriots leaders drew concerns over a proposed new payroll tax for Salem and Keizer employers that would raise money to expand bus service hours, build two new transit centers and buy new buses. The tax would not affect wages for employees at taxed businesses.

The county’s public works department has the largest portion of the budget, at $219 million. Behind public works are the health department with $117.7 million and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office with $97.6 million.
