Around 20 McNary High School students walked out of school around 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, looking to express their disapproval of the federal government.
The group walked east from the high school up North Chemawa Road before turning on to River Road, pausing at the intersection. Students chanted an expletive about federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement as they walked, and some passing cars honked in support.
Some students carried signs, one reading “Abolish ICE”, and used a megaphone to speak against U.S. funding for Israel, among other topics.
Imogen Mattson, one of the students who helped organize the April 29 protest, said students aimed to spread awareness of their views. These included disapproval of the Trump administration, federal immigration enforcement activities and “fascist police in our streets.” Students also advocated for the rights of transgender people.
“We are the future, and this is our future that we have to fight for,” said Elysia Copley, another student organizer.
Mattson said the protest was advertised to other students through social media and flyers around school. After turning on to River Road from Chemawa Road, students walked until reaching Northeast Maine Avenue before heading back to school.
