Keizerites can hunt for a chance to win prizes throughout town in a new scavenger hunt this May.
The “Keizer Quest” scavenger hunt, organized by nonprofit Keizer United, will begin Friday, May 1, and continue through Friday, May 15.
Each day, a QR code will be hidden in a Keizer location and the first person to find it will win gift cards from a local business valuing $100 or more. Prizes can be picked up from Odd Moe’s Pizza, and will include a year’s worth of free breakfast sandwiches from Chick-Fil-A, a massage from Cherry City Massage, a gift card to Bouchér Jewelers and restaurant gift cards.
Anyone who finds a QR code will be entered into a raffle for the grand prize: $250 worth of gift cards for Dutch Brothers plus a $250 cash prize. The raffle will be held on Saturday, May 16.
“We just really wanted to see a fun, free activity that would bring family and friends together and just build community in Keizer,” said Jennifer Palanuk, chair of the nonprofit.
She added the organization wants to highlight “unique spots” and landmarks in Keizer, so the QR codes will be hidden in such sites. Hunters can find the codes in publicly accessible places during daylight hours.
Palanuk said codes will be outdoors, within the city of Keizer boundaries. On the final day, she said the code will be in Keizer Rapids Park because the organization hopes to draw people to KeizerFEST, which is set for May 14-May 17 this year.
Palanuk said three clues to the QR code’s location will be posted throughout each day on the Keizer Quest Facebook page and texted to those who register ahead of time. Clues will include riddles and nods to Keizer history, and each one will be easier to solve than the last.
The scavenger hunt was inspired by a similar event in Texas, which Palanuk said she and her husband discovered while visiting their son in December. The organization hopes the event will become annual.Palanuk said people are encouraged to register for the event through the Keizer Quest website or through a link on the Keizer United Facebook page.
