‘State of the District’ event about schools open to the public

Staff from the Salem-Keizer School District will address literacy instruction, goals for student outcomes and more during next week’s State of the District event.

The annual event provides an overview of the district’s progress towards its goals and opportunities for families to learn about district programs.

The free public event starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at McKay High School, at 2440 Lancaster Dr. N.E. in Salem. Aaron Harada, district communications director, said the event will be recorded and later broadcasted on CC:Media.

Child care will be available, as well as language support services. Those interested in attending can RSVP on the school district’s website

Harada said speakers will include Claggett Creek Middle School’s Robin Buckingham, principal of Claggett Creek Middle School, and Tamika Hampton, the vice principal. They will speak on how the district’s middle school curriculum “has made a difference” at the school, with Deputy Superintendent Danielle Neves and curriculum director Erik Jespersen addressing how the district is “scaling curriculum and training” across the district, according to Harada.

Superintendent Andrea Castañeda will provide an update on the district’s progress towards the school boards goals related to student outcomes.

Other topics will include instructional practices for early literacy, student behavior and ways the district supports at-risk youth.
