‘Love Letters’ exhibit replaces McNary student show

The Keizer Art Association will host an art show with a new theme in February after the usual show displaying work from McNary High School students was canceled.

Debbie Napier, an association volunteer, said the McNary Student Art Show is typically held each February. However, this year she said the school’s new art teacher declined to do the show this year.

“I was always there for intake the last couple of years, and their enthusiasm coming in to set up their art work, and just their energy. I’m going to miss that,” Napier said of the students.

Under the new theme, “Love Letters,” art will be displayed from Thursday, Feb. 5, through Wednesday, March 4, at the association’s gallery in the Keizer Cultural Center. A reception and winner’s announcement is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The show will also feature a youth gallery, for artists aged 4-14. Art submissions will be accepted  3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Forms are on the association’s website.

The new theme asks artists to consider what represents a love letter to them, such as a treasured memory or gift from a loved one, Napier said.

Karen Saleen, president of the art association, said in an email the art can consist of anything related to love, “giving the artist license to express or interpret the theme” in the way they wish.

Saleen wrote that artists must adhere to family-friendly guidelines and the theme, but creativity and diverse artistic mediums are encouraged. According to a press release, all types of art will be displayed, including 2D art, 3D art and photography.

Saleen said in an email the inspiration came from Linda Baker with Keizer Homegrown Theater due to its upcoming performance of the play “Love Letters.”

“Since the play and the KAA art show will be happening within the same month it was thought that having similar themes might benefit both organizations at the same time,” Saleen said, adding that Valentine’s Day taking place in February made the theme feel “natural.”
