In 2022, the Keizer Police Department’s Jeremy Darst traveled to California to find a new police dog for the agency.
Darst had gone on ride-alongs with K9 units as a teenage cadet, and seeing the handlers’ passion for their dogs and the K9 work “rubbed off” on him. He had been serving as a patrol officer since 2018, and spent time assisting with the city’s police dogs before being selected as a handler himself.
