Police department calls: Wanted man surrenders after brief Keizer standoff

A Keizer man wanted on weapons-related charges was arrested by Keizer police on Saturday, Jan. 3, after a brief standoff.

Armando M. Garcia, 35, was spotted by officers and Garcia walked into a carport in the 4700 block of North Fillmore Street at about 11 a.m.

“Officers set up a perimeter and used a bean bag round to break a window to better see and communicate with Mr. Garcia. After a 30-minute standoff, Mr. Garcia exited the carport and was detained but not before he resisted arrest and injured one officer,” according to Lt. Trevor Wenning of the Keizer Police Department.

He said one officer suffered a minor wrist injury.

•In other police actions, officers were called about noon Christmas Eve to the Keizer Target store, for a report that children had been left in a vehicle.

Police found a 22-month-old toddler and an 7-month-old infant alone in the car, which was unlocked with the engine running.

A purse on the front seat provided a name and police located a number. They called the number, and the phone was answered by a woman who said she was inside shopping.

The children had been left alone for about 30 minutes, Wenning said.

Ashley Reis, 38, of Woodburn, was cited for second-degree child neglect.

•On Saturday, Jan. 3, patrol officers located a vehicle stolen out of Beaverton as it was driven through Keizer at about 10:30 p.m.

Officers followed the vehicle on North Verda Lane and then on the Salem Parkway to the area of Fred Meyer before attempting a traffic stop.

A short pursuit followed with Salem police successfully deploying a spike strip. The vehicle crashed when trying to turn at Broadway and Pine Street in Salem. The driver ran but was soon caught by officers. Four passengers in the car were detained.

A 17-year-old from Beaverton was accused of being the driver and arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to perform the duties of a driver, misdemeanor and felony elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering and criminal trespass.

A 16-year-old from Beaverton was charged with possession of burglary tools.
