Here’s the latest from Keizertimes

Good morning.

Danielle Bethell’s bid to become Oregon’s next governor will have to wait, judging by recent polling.

Bethell, a Marion County commissioner, has strong ties to Keizer. She was executive director of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce from 2016 to 2020. A Republican, Bethell was elected commissioner in 2020.

She opened her campaign a year ago. Since then, she has criss-crossed the state seeking support. Bethell picked up endorsement after endorsement from other county commissioners.

But Bethell is dead last in a recent poll shared by Rushlight Research of Salem.

The survey showed a significant lead for Christine Drazan. A state senator, Drazan hopes to repeat as the Republican nominee opposing Democrat Tina Kotek. The poll showed she had support from 39.6% of those surveyed.

Bethell came in at 2%.

Another number shows the hurdle the commissioner faces. Six out of 10 people responding to the poll had never heard of her.

With ballots going in the mail next week, Bethell’s campaign treasury is low. As of Friday morning, her campaign reported $15,839 in the bank. Drazan showed $570,301.

Election Day is May 19.

Anyone acquainted with Bethell knows she’s a fighter. She might not make it this go-around but odds seem high she’s not done running for state office.

Now, here’s what we’ve been reporting on in recent days at Keizertimes.
