A water line project by the city of Keizer will close Cummings Elementary School this Friday, April 3.
Aaron Harada, district communications director, said the repairs will involve shutting off water lines to the school, which prompted the decision to cancel school that day.
Standard on-site morning child care will still be available to families who typically use it, Hulseman said in the message.
“We understand the impact this disruption may have on our students and families and appreciate your understanding while we initiate this school cancellation with a focus on student safety and well-being,” Hulseman stated.
A message sent to families by principal Hillary Hulseman on Tuesday said the school was notified that day of the plan for emergency repairs.
Keare Blaylock, Keizer public works director, said the city is upgrading an old water pipeline along Dearborn Avenue North. The work involves shutting off water valves to shift to the new pipe from the old and ensure connecting branches of the waterline are attached correctly.
Blaylock said the city needs to shut off a water line running along Delight Street North for the work on Friday, which will affect the school.
The city provides funding to upgrade old water pipelines each year, Blaylock said.
Blaylock said the city notified water customers that would be affected by the project along Dearborn in February. She said the city had hoped to complete work that would Cummings over spring break, but it was unable to do so.
