Keizer police auctioning off a trailer, motorcycle, and cars

The Keizer Police Department is holding a surplus auction for 12 vehicles, a trailer, and four ebikes.

As a part of its effort to recycle old equipment, the department is selling off old patrol cars and agency vehicles that are no longer needed.

“At some point in time, vehicles outlive their use,” Lt. Trevor Wenning said. “That could be for a number of reasons. It could be mileage, it could be that it’s starting to wear and tear, and it’s just time to replace them.”

The department has already sold three cars. Remaining auctions will take place incrementally until spring.

The auctions are held through GovDeals, an online services marketplace. Wenning said that those interested in buying one of the vehicles should go to www.govdeals.com and input the year, make, and model of the car into the site’s search bar.

Vehicle surplus sales are common, Wenning said. Police cars are on a regular rotation.

The department sells off vehicles to buy new apparatus, and also to free up storage space. Evidence vehicles from active cases are constantly brought through the department, Wenning said, which makes crowding an issue.

He said that the cars are sold with some minor issues. Patrol cars must quickly accelerate and perform abrupt stops, and so the wear and tear is worsened, Wenning said. Some have minor engine issues, which will be specified in the listing.

“We try to be fair, but we also know that these are taxpayers’ dollars at work, so we want to get as much as we can for those vehicles,” Wenning said.

He said that the patrol cars have seen the most action. The trailer was used for longer investigations and brought to crime scenes as a portable office. It was used in cases such as Peter Zielinski’s case in 2011, where the Keizer man murdered his wife.

The vehicles are listed at low to fair market value according to Kelley Blue Book, a used car appraisal website.
