Keizer setting strides for Veterans at 5K event

More than 100 Keizerites turned up for the Help Oregon Veterans run/walk event held July 6, at the McNary Golf Club.

Keizerite and Navy veteran Robert Wood, the man inspired to create the event, did so after seeing the need of some within the community, particularly homeless veterans which comprise more than 10% of Oregon’s homeless population, according to a recent Axios report utilizing data from the U.S. Census office.

The event had 109 runners/walkers with 46 Keizerites volunteering at the event.

Overall, the event raised $2,840 with proceeds earmarked for helping homeless Oregon veterans find overnight housing, according to Wood.

For runners, the overall male winner was Garrett Clack, age 15, with a time of 18:42, while the male Masters winner was David Bashaw, age 63, with a time of 25:00.

In the female category, the overall winner was Melissa Williams, age 49, with a time of 23:42 while the Masters winner was Kendele Miyasaki, age 40, with a time of 28:06.

In addition to run/walk events, attendees listened to the musical talent of banjo master Larry Scruggs as well as having a guest appearance by Kevin Mannix (R-21).
