Riders pedal loops from Keizer in 50th Monster Cookie ride

The day was perfect for a bike ride – sunny but not too warm, and none of those nasty winds that can slow a rider.

The 50th year of the Monster Cookie Metric Century on Sunday, April 26, drew about 725 riders – a 50% increase over last year.

And about 20 riders participated in the Mini Cookie, a 6.2-mile route that started at McNary High School, looped through Keizer and returned to the school.

The Salem Bicycle Club runs the two rides and it teamed up this year with the Safe Routes to School team for the first time to offer the Salem Bicycle Rodeo at the high school.

“We see big things coming from these small beginnings,” said Ken Freeman, one of the ride coordinators from the bike club.
