New football conference means one long road trip a year for McNary

Summer break may have just started, but the picture for McNary’s 2022 football season in the newly aligned 6A-Special District 1 division has become a lot clearer.

Now in a division with North Salem, South Salem, West Salem, Sprague, North Medford, South Medford and Sheldon, the Celtics’ travel looks a little different.

Last season, while part of the old 6A-Special District 6, McNary traveled to Bend and Summit for league games. Both trips are close to 140 miles one-way.

But those were the only drives of more than an hour for league games. Had 6A-SD6 remained intact, McNary’s longest trip this coming season would have been the 60-mile drive to Mountain View.

Now, a yearly trip from Keizer to Medford to play either North Medford or South Medford, trips of 240 miles one-way, will be needed.

Regardless of the travel changes, the season is set to start on Friday, Aug. 26, with the jamboree at Tigard.

The Celtics are at home for the first time on Friday, Sept. 10, against Tualatin in the last of two non-league games on the schedule.

League play is scheduled to begin the following week when McNary travels to South Medford on Friday, Sept. 16.
