Council may crack down on basketball hoops with revised ordinance

City officials may approve an ordinance that would place new restrictions on basketball hoops throughout the city.

The Keizer City Council will take up an ordinance effectively banning the placement of basketball hoops on sidewalks when they are not in use at its meeting Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The ordinance prohibits any sidewalks obstructions and basketball hoops, specifically, must be removed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. The changes also require reflectors or reflective tape on both sides of basketball standards, require that basketball standards be placed only in streets and will prohibit placement entirely on streets where cars cannot park legally.

Recreational vehicles with electrical cords running across sidewalks would also be required to be placed under a strip protector or use cones “or other devices” to warn sidewalk users.

Failure to comply will result in a $500 fine.
