Firework sales support McNary’s band program

Allycia Thomas and Emily Bish show off some of the products available at the McNary High School Band’s fireworks tent.

McNary Band Boosters fireworks stand is up and running at Countryside Christian Church 5775 McLeod Lane N.E.

Operating hours are 9 a.m. through 9:30 p.m.

Proceeds from sales go to supplementing the band’s budget and is used for such things as instrument repair, new instruments, and festivals and competitions costs. The fund also lowers the financial hurdle to all students participating in the band.

Community members can also donate cans to be recycled at the site.

There are still unfilled staffing slots at the tent. To sign up for a shift, visit tinyurl.com/bandfireworks. The stand will close Friday, July 5.

Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office urges all residents to keep it safe and legal this 4th of July.

The OSFM encourages everyone to use the four B’s of safe fireworks use:

• Be Prepared before lighting fireworks: keep water available by using a garden hose or bucket.

• Be Safe when lighting fireworks: keep children and pets away from fireworks.

• Be Responsible after lighting fireworks: never relight a dud. Wait 15 to 20 minutes then soak it in a bucket of water before disposal.

• Be Aware: use only legal fireworks and use them only in legal places.

Oregon law bans possession, use, or sale of fireworks that fly, explode, or travel more than six feet on the ground or 12 inches into the air.

Those who misuse fireworks or allow fireworks to cause damage are liable and may be required to pay fire suppression costs or other damage. Parents are also liable for fireworks damage caused by their children.
