Wheelchairs welcome at nursery grand opening

Terra Gardens Nursery & Bark is having a grand opening on Saturday, June 4 for their new greenhouse that is attached to the garden center.

During the grand opening, there will be roses and hanging baskets on sale, rock painting and free soil for every plant and pot purchased.

Dan Estacio, one of the owners of Terra Gardens, has been working there for 20 years and has focused on ways to improve the business.

“One of the first things I did as a manager was to come up with a long-term plan about what we needed to do and it involved building a new garden center and greenhouse,” Estacio said.

The biggest focus for Estacio since becoming a manager was making the entire building accessible for those with disabilities. Estacio mentioned that many garden centers have floors with gravel, lots of steps, and muddy areas that are practically impossible for people with wheelchairs to navigate.

“My own mother is in a wheelchair and I thought, I want a facility that she can see everything in and so that was our target. We made everything ADA friendly,” he said.

Estacio was shocked by the amount of support he and his wife Pam, the other owner of Terra Gardens, received from the community. They have been visited by dozens of wheelchair users from places all over Oregon. Terra Gardens has been listed on Oregon’s ADA website as the most ADA-friendly garden center in the area.

“I thought other people might appreciate it, but I was really surprised to end up on a state website where people were traveling sometimes hours to get here. Instead of being disappointed, they were raving about it. They were really excited because they could finally go anywhere in a gardening center,” he said.

The grand opening will be during their normal store hours, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The rock painting and free soil is currently planned to be from about 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. although the times are subject to change.
