Cherriots could dramatically reduce youth fares

It’s less than 200 days until Cherriots restores Saturday service and, in addition to that, the Salem Area Mass Transit District Board of Directors will take public comment on proposed changes to its youth fare program at a meeting Thursday, Feb. 28.

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Senator Hearing Room at Courthouse square, 555 Court Street N.E. in Salem.

A new Statewide Transportation Improvement Fund (STIF) will provide for weekend, extended weekday evening, and holiday service on Cherriots Local buses; and Saturday and holiday service on Cherriots Regional buses.

STIF funds will also allow Cherriots to reduce its youth fares for students in grades nine through 12. Cherriots’ STIF grant application dedicates more than 2 percent of the grant be dedicated to youth in 2020 and 2021.
