KT brings home 29 awards

The Keizertimes won a total of 29 awards in two Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association contests announced via a virtual presentation on Sept 9.

In the Better Newspaper Contest for journalism, the Keizertimes won one first place award, six second place awards and seven third place awards.

First place honors were awarded to Matt Rawlings for Best Sports Story about Tony Aicher, Keizer kids pay tribute to their biggest fan.

Second place awards were presented for:

• Best editorial,

• Best enterprise reporting, for stories about city of Keizer’s computers being hacked and held for ransom,

• Best coverage of business or economic issue, Lauren Murphy, for her reporting on Keizer restaurants affected by COVID,

• Best sports story, Matt Rawlings, McNary shocks West Salem in MVC thriller,

• Best photo essay, an array of photo of the delayed Class of 2020 graduation for McNary High School,

• Best special section, Keizertimes staff, 2020 Holiday Events and Gift Guide.

Third place honors were presented for:

• Best sports story, Volcanoes face uncertain future,

• Best government coverage,

• Best graphics,

• Best feature photo,

• Best news photo, Teachers on parade,

• Best educational coverage, Maximizing the time given,

Best feature story, A run for his life,

Best feature, personality.

Staff members winning awards in the news contest were Eric A. Howald, Andrew Jackson, Lauren Murphy and Matt Rawlings.

In the Better Ad Ideas Contest for advertising, the Keizertimes won three first place awards for production manager Andrew Jackson including best black and white ad for Boucher Jewelers, best section cover for Health Wellness magazine and best single house ad for a Thank You first responders ad after the wildfires of September 2020.

Jackson also won seven second place and five third place awards for advertising.

The two contests were judged by members of the Arizona Press Association.
