Story pole dedication slated for Saturday

The Keizer story poles outside of City Hall on Chemawa Rd. will be dedicated this Saturday.

The City of Keizer and the Keizer Public Art Commission will host a dedication of the story poles carved out of two trees on Chemawa Road NE that stand in City Hall Plaza. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.

The story poles will be dedicated after a years-long effort. The original idea came from Public Works Director Bill Lawyer when the two fir trees reached the end of their life and had to be topped. Lawyer thought turning the remaining stumps into works of art would make a unique addition to the civic center campus.

Kim Steen and Bethy Melendy of the Keizer Public Art Commission will each dedicate one pole.

The two poles were carved by Kevin and Tyler Strauslin of Oregon 3D Art and Chainsaw Sculptures, working from designs presented by the arts commission.
