Endorsement clarification

In the Keizertimes city council endorsements that appeared in the October 9 edition, we wrote that candidate Ross Day’s past included “fighting against the rights of LGBTQ+ Oregonians.” Day represented members of the Oregon Family Council, a group that opposed gay marriage in Oregon, and argued that the title of the ballot would read all “political subdivisions” would need to issue marriage licenses regardless of gender. Day’s argument was that, with such language, even water districts and school districts would be tasked with issuing marriage licenses.

Day contends that the case does not represent his past or current values. As a point of contrast, Day offered evidence of his involvement in helping the group Straight Women for Marriage Equality, a group that supported gay marriage, establish its non-profit status in 2011.

This does not change the paper’s endorsement of Dylan Juran.
