The movement to bring a public library to Keizer is launching a virtual book club in August.
Keizer’s Library: The Next Chapter, the group dedicated to the establishing a public library, is offering readers two options to participate in a city-wide book club.
Anyone who wants to participate will have access to ebooks, a discussion guide and receive an invitation to a virtual discussion with Leslie S. Klinger, the editor of the Library of Congress Crime Series.
The books selected for the first outing are The Rat Began to Gnaw at the Rope by C.W. Grafton and That Affair Next Door by Anna Katherine Green. There are no limits on the number of copies available.
Grafton’s book, originally published in 1943, introduces Kentucky attorney Gil Henry. Henry is asked by a client to investigate stock she is inheriting and ends up with a mark on his back. With the client and her secretive brother as accomplices, Henry tries to find answers to questions someone desperately wants to keep him from asking.
In That Affair Next Door, published in 1897, elderly spinster Amelia Butterworth in the posh neighborhood of Gramercy Park discovers the body of a woman in a mansion next door. She then enters into a race to solve the case with the local detective. The book is especially notable because Butterworth was the first female sleuth to be featured in a series.
The virtual event with Klinger is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m.
