Leah Doutt led the way with 20 points and five assists and Bekah Grimmer added 13 points and seven rebounds as the McNary girls basketball team pulled off the upset victory over Bend on Friday, Feb 14, defeating the Lava Bears 46-41.

The Celtics started the game on a 12-2 run, thanks to five quick points from Doutt, a pair of buckets by Grimmer and a 3-pointer from Kennedy Buss.

McNary took a 13-6 lead into the second quarter and eventually extended the lead to 13 after two more baskets by Grimmer.

Kenzie Proctor knocked down a shot moments later, but Bend got the deficit down to 21-11 before the half — it was the least amount of points McNary has given up in a half during league play.

After Grimmer started the third quarter with another hoop to put herself in double-figures, the Lava Bears responded with an 8-0 run to get themselves within four. But a pair of free throws by Grimmer and two 3-pointers from Doutt allowed the Celtics to get back in control with an 8-0 run of their own.

The Celtics began the fourth quarter with a 31-22 advantage. Bend cut the lead down to five with 4:04 left in the final period. Fortunately for the Celtics, Doutt was able to seal the win with her play on both sides of the court.

With 2:11 left in the game and McNary clinging to a 36-31 lead, Doutt nailed her fourth triple of the contest. Just seconds later, the junior point guard got a steal and finished a layup on the other end to put the Celtics back up by double-digits.

The Celtics officially put the game away after a clutch bucket Annie Leigh Besa, which thwarted any comeback chance that Bend had.

McNary returns home on Friday, Feb. 21 to take on McKay at 7:15.
