The McNary swim team came away with a split in their dual meet with Sprague on Thursday, Jan. 9 as the girls team defeated the Olympians 92-60 while the boys lost 104-62.

The Celtic girls swam their best meet of the season according to head coach Casey Lewin, winning seven races on the night.

“The girls are really starting to hit their stride and they are getting their relays figured out as we approach the district meet. We just had a lot of good swims,” Lewin said.

Senior swimmer Eloisa Moreno and sophomore Paris Boyd each won multiple individual events on the evening. Boyd was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 27.08 seconds and touching the wall just .02 seconds before her teammate Alyssa Garvey. Boyd also took home first place in the 100-free (59.35).

Moreno, on the other hand, won the 200-free (2:21.82) and the 100-butterfly (1:12.15).

Both girls also helped the 200-free and 200-medley relay team to victories.

“That was huge for their confidence, knowing that they are in shape and strong enough to go out and swim loose and relaxed,” Lewin said of Boyd and Moreno.

Emily Stenlund was the other individual winner for the McNary girls, finishing first in the 100-backstroke (1:17.11).

However, the Celtic boys were unable to find the same success, winning just two races overall. Kyle Hooper was able to win the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:13.76 and helped the 400-free relay team to a victory.

Even though the results didn’t show on the scoreboard, Lewin still approves of where the boys squad is heading as the season begins to wind down.

“They are about where I thought we would be,” Lewin said of his boys. “If we had a little more pool space and chances to practice more, I think they would maybe be a little bit faster. But I’m still pleased with where we’re at. We have a lot of youth.

McNary will swim in their final dual meet of the season at the Kroc Center against McKay on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
