Keizer celebrates Native American heritage

November is Native American Heritage Month, and the art and tradition stemming from the Chemawa Indian School is being celebrated at the Keizer Cultural Center.

Chrystal Parsons, the indigenous arts teacher at Chemawa Indian School, led a basket weaving demonstration Monday night, hosted by the Keizer Arts Association as part of its First Monday Meetup schedule.

Library measure fails

Measure 24-468 was defeated by a 55%-45% margin in Tuesday’s election. If approved the measure would have added a $2.50 per month fee to city services bills to fund a public library.

Currently Keizer residents have the all-volunteer Keizer Community Library, housed at the Keizer Cultural Center.The $2.50 fee would have generated about $400,000 per year which would have funded a professional librarian and a children’s librarian.

Avian flu cause of dead geese in area

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that multiple dead geese infected with bird flu have been removed from Staats Lake on three separate occasions in the past two weeks.

SKPS board selects Salazar as new director for Zone 6

At Tuesday’s school board meeting, the Salem-Keizer School Board directors appointed Robert Salazar as the new director to represent Zone 6.

Salazar spent 45 years in education prior to retirement, serving as principal at Myers and Washington elementary schools in the Salem-Keizer district, according to his application and resume.

Thatcher earns third term

Republican Kim Thatcher was elected to her third term as a state senator for District 11 in Tuesday’s election over challenger Democrat Richard Walsh.

Election results from the Secretary of State’s office as of Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, showed Thatcher with 53.17% (15,702 votes) to Walsh’s 46.61% (13,809 votes). There was also a handful of write-ins.

Mannix wins closer than expected race

Republican Kevin Mannix won his race for state House District 21 against Democrat Ramiro Navarro.

 Returns as of Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, showed Mannix winning 51.7% (9,521 votes) against 45.6% (8,377 votes) for Navarro. Libertarian candidate Michael Morrow won 2.5% (467 votes).

Thatcher leads Walsh for Senate

State Republican Senator Kim Thatcher is expected to retain her District 11 seat for another term as it appears that she defeated Democratic challenger Richard Walsh, an attorney and former Keizer city councilor.
