
Students, Keizer neighbors join forces to tackle graffiti

A community vigil is scheduled for Friday, March 28, to remember Zolayha Johnson, a McNary High School student killed in a car crash outside Stayton on March 23. Her younger sister is being treated at a Portland hospital.

McNary High School students got one-on-one experience practicing – and performing – alongside top musicians from the Oregon Symphony.

Surviving teenagers told police that Christopher Atkinson, 33, was smoking marijuana and drinking with them before a crash outside Stayton that killed a McNary High School junior.

Fans of McNary sports gathered Saturday at the Keizer Event Center for a benefit auction for the McNary Athletic Booster Club. The event featured a dinner buffet and live and silent auctions.

Superintendent Andrea Castañeda received praise from every member of the school board Tuesday night for her work navigating challenging budget cuts and communicating clearly with the public and political leaders about the challenges facing public schools in Oregon.

Bike safety has gotten a boost in a special program at Clear Lake Elementary School. Parents even get to ride along this week.

A night of buying and dining is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, as the McNary Athletic Booster Club again turns to auctions to raise funds for school programs. The event is open to the public.

The Salem-Keizer School District will not end or rename programs focused on equity or otherwise change operations in response to Trump administration directives that Superintendent Andrea Castañeda described as “legally unclear.”
