She manages the city’s greatest asset

A city is an organization with many parts, none more than its Human Resources Department. Keizer’s two-person HR Department, led by Machell DePina,  is busy every day not only keeping records up to date for more than 100 employees but also their health insurance and pension needs.

DePina took Keizer’s Human Resource director position after years serving similar positions with the state of Oregon in both the Employment and Child Services departments.

The last dance of Carole France

For more than 60 years Carole France has taught thousands of local students how to dance.

The 85-year old dance teacher taught her last class at France School of Dance in January.

One man’s trash

Loren’s Sanitation Service is moving forward with a third generation private family ownership. For the first time in more than 60 years there are no Thackery family members operating Keizer’s Loren’s Sanitation. Wayne Thackery sold the company to Nic Dahl in early January.

Have a cow, man — or name one at least

In celebration of Keizer’s 40th anniversary as a city. the Keizer Public Arts Commission (KPAC) will oversee the installing of a new art piece in June in the roundabout at the intersection of Chemawa Road NE and Verda Lane NE.

These are some crafty students

Twice a week up to 30 Whiteaker Middle School students head to a classroom before regular classes begin. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys and girls gather for the Craft Club at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Craft Club is not a class, there are no credits offered. Teacher Sundey Turney and special program instruction assistant Shawna Dolph lead the club.
