Senate Bill 146 was passed in 2017 designating the third Saturday in March as Cherry Blossom Day in Salem. Cherry Blossom Day at the Capitol, taking place this year on March 18, was created to celebrate the cherry blossom trees on the Capitol Mall, and organically became a celebration of the Japanese cultural influence in Oregon due to the significance of the cherry blossom (Sakura) to their community.

CTEC students to plant trees
About 40 junior and senior high school students from the Career Education Technical Center in Salem are scheduled to plant Douglas-fir seedlings in the Fern Ridge Demonstration Area of the Santiam State Forest on Friday, Feb. 10. Fern Ridge Demonstration Area was burned during the 2020 Labor Day fires.
Gerry Frank Amphitheatre and Union Street bridge to go green for World Cholangiocarcinoma Day
The Union Street pedestrian bridge and the Gerry Frank Amphitheatre at Riverfront Park in Salem will be lit with green later this month to mark Cholangiocarcinoma Day, as well as honor those who are fighting the disease and remembering those who have succumbed.
