The sixth annual, family-friendly Help Oregon Veterans 5K run and 3K walk event is coming around for another lap on Saturday, July 6 at 9 a.m. at the McNary Estates Golf Club.
Keizerite and Navy veteran Robert Wood, the man inspired to hold the event, did so after seeing the extreme need of some within the community, particularly homeless veterans which comprise more than 10% of Oregon’s homeless population, or around 1,400 veterans, according to a recent Axios report utilizing data from the U.S. Census office.
After witnessing this, he created the nonprofit and aptly named Help Oregon Veterans which can be reviewed by visiting helporegonveterans.org.
“The event location will be easy to find due to the 20 foot red, white and blue balloon arch,” Wood stated.
In addition, the 5 and 3K events is the musical talent of banjo master and Keizerite Larry Scruggs as well as an appearance by Keizer’s state representative Kevin Mannix (R-21), who will be hosting a meet and greet with attendees to illustrate what the state is doing to support veterans currently as well as the lyrical stylings of another Keizer resident and singer, MaryAnn Zielinski who will give her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
All proceeds from the event are donated to local Veterans organizations.
