E.Z. Orchards had a delayed opening on Labor Day, Sept. 5 after the driver of a vehicle traveling down Hazelgreen Road NE fell asleep at the wheel and struck the building at around 7:20 a.m., according to Claire Zielinski, a spokesperson for the family-run business.

She said no one was seriously injured, although the driver received stitches after some minor cuts and bruises. Zielinski said the vehicle took out an entire wall, destroying the Orchard’s popular donut shop along with some plumbing, sinks and cabinets. She doesn’t currently have an estimate on how long the repairs will take to complete, but they are already underway.

“We’re working on some way to have a temporary donut stand,” she said. In the meantime, she said the Strawberry Shortcake Stand is still operating, as usual.
