Future Olympic hopefuls and purveyors of the pugilistic sweet science filled the ring in Keizer on Saturday, Aug. 6.
Inside Toe 2 Toe Boxing Gym, the crowd filled the seats and available standing room, ready for 12 bouts. 24 boxers, ages 11-30, representing 14 clubs from Oregon, Washington and California competed in the USA Boxing sanctioned event.
In the main event, Haidon Alan from Wildcat Boxing in Salem defeated Freddy Coronado Boxing’s David Tapia, out of Portland. For the 139-pound bout, Alan moved up in weight while Tapia dropped down. The size difference was apparent in Alan’s ability to move and out-quick Tapia, avoiding the power of his larger opponent.
In the end, Alan won by unanimous decision, one of nine bouts to finish with a judges’ consensus on the night.
The only match that had the judges split was the 176-pound bout between David Allen from Toe 2 Toe Boxing and Brandon McDonough of Mendez Boxing. McDonough came away with the split decision whil Allen struggled to find a rhythm in the match after hurting his shoulder twice in the first round.
Two bouts ended by referee stoppage. First, Kevin Coronado of Freddy Coronado Boxing stopped Gunnar Cushway of Portland Boxing Club. Later in the day, Shamrock Boxing’s Ashton Owens finished off Robert Lacy from Bend Boxing.
