AquaSox snap Volcanoes’ four-win streak

By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes July 23: Volcanoes 5, Spokane 3 Salem-Keizer trailed 2-0 after 2-1/2 innings but scored once in the third and then took over. Starter Jason Forjet won his third game against no losses and struck out 11 in his 6-2/3 innings. Shilo McCall, still pushing his offensive figures upward, hit a solo home run in the third inning. The Volcanoes’ big inning was the fourth. Skyler Ewing led off with a walk, and Sam Mende doubled him home. A single by Travious Relaford scored Mende. Relaford moved to third base on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fernando Pujadas. Both of the Indians’ runs came on solo homers, one by Zach Cone and one by Saquan Johnson. Eury Sanchez had his fifth save. Andrew Barnett was the losing pitcher. July 24: Volcanoes 8, Spokane 2 Shilo McCall’s third-inning grand slam and one of Drew Leenhouts’ stronger starts made Salem-Keizer the winner of a series that had two games to go. The Volcanoes went over the .500 mark overall for the first time this season. Each club had seven hits, but an eight-inning rally and Leenhouts’ ability to scatter hits gave the Volcanoes a six-run victory.
