“The Butler: A Witness to History” by Wil Haygood c.2013, Atria (37Ink) $18.00 / $21.00 Canada 97 pages BOOK REVIEW by TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Your boss is a very powerful person. When things need doing, he makes sure they’re done.  She knows people, knows when to act and when to be patient, and how to get the best from her employees. He’s a class act. Everybody wants to work with her. Yes, your boss is powerful – but Eugene Allen had you beat. Over the course of thirty-four years, he worked for eight of the most powerful men in the free world. In “The Butler: A Witness to History” by Wil Haygood, you’ll read about Allen’s history-making job. In the middle of 2008, long before Democratic candidates for office were decided, Wil Haygood says that he “knew” Barack Obama would be the next president – which got him thinking. Haygood decided to find someone for whom all the historical events of the past sixty years had meant something. He wanted to find a black man or woman who’d worked in the White House. His search led him to eighty-nine-year-old Eugene Allen. Born some five decades after the end of slavery, Allen grew up working in a white family’s kitchen. There, he learned the fine arts of table-setting and dish-washing, which served him well: during the Depression, when jobs were scarce,...

New subdivision gets approval

By CRAIG MURPHY Of the Keizertimes A hearings officer has approved plans for a new 54-lot subdivision off Windsor Island Road. The decision by Cynthia Domas, dated Aug. 5, followed a July 11 public hearing on the matter. RPB Holdings LLC has proposed turning an 8.49 acre parcel into 54 single family homes. A new street – proposed to be Stacey Lee Drive – is to be constructed, stretching from Windsor Island Road to Willow Leaf Street. The approval came despite more than two dozen comments against the project, both in the form of written letters and during last month’s hearing. “It is hereby found that applicant has met the burden of proving the applicable standards and criteria for approval of the subdivision upon satisfying the following conditions, which shall be completed, including review and approval by the appropriate department, prior to the timelines outlined below,” Domas wrote. “Compliance with the conditions of approval shall be the sole responsibility of the applicants and/or property owner.” To read the complete article and other news from around the Keizer area, pick up a copy of the August 16 print edition of Keizertimes, available at stores all around the area. LOFT set to open Sept. 9

By CRAIG MURPHY Of the Keizertimes Starting next month, women in Keizer can find new clothes in the loft. Actually, that’s the LOFT, a line of clothing stores that are a division of Ann Taylor. A LOFT spokesperson confirmed the company is opening a location in Keizer Station. “The LOFT store should be open by Sept. 9,” said the spokesperson, noting it will be a concept store. LOFT concept stores have seating and open space, featuring larger groupings of mannequins to show additional outfit options. The store, currently being remodeled, is located at 6305 Ulali Drive NE, between David’s Bridal and Ulta Beauty. A permit was applied for in late February worth $438,400. However, due to a backlog at the county level the permit wasn’t issued until early July. No square footage was listed on the permit. On opening day and throughout opening week, guests will receive a tote as a gift with purchases of $75 or more, while supplies last. Shoppers will also be able to enter a chance to win a $250 LOFT shopping spree, as well as a personal styling session. Types of clothing at LOFT will include silhouettes, polka dots, dusty pastels, autumn hues and more for fall fashions like denims, pencil skirts, lace-front tops and polished pumps. Each LOFT employee is also a stylist who can give fashion advice and ideas. Opening week hours...
