Lee quits Blanchet to head career tech initiative

Chuck Lee, a former Keizer city councilor and longtime president of Blanchet Catholic School, announced his resignation from the school Wednesday, July 10. Lee is joining the Department of Mission Advancement, a subsidiary of Mountain West Investments, as the president of an adjunct division that will be focusing on working with local Salem area education and business partners to form career technical education programs. Current principal of Blanchet, Anthony Guevara, will take over as president/principal of the school. Volcanoes take down AquaSox 4-1 on road

  By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes The Volcanoes made it two in a row at Everett Memorial Stadium on July 5, beating the Northern Division leaders 4-1. All the runs came on extra-base hits: a leadoff home run by the AquaSox’s Jamodrick McGruder in the first inning, a two-run homer by Sam Eberle in the sixth and a two-run double by Geno Escalante in the sixth. McGruder’s homer was his first of the season. Starting pitcher Andrew Leenhouts ran his record to 3-0, striking out four and allowing four hits and no bases on balls in his five innings. Eduard Encinosa had his first save. Salem-Keizer’s first threat came in the second. Elliott Blair singled with one out, stole second base after another out and continued to third on an error by shortstop Jack Reinheimer.  However, Everett starter Thyago Vieira struck out the next batter. JBO team takes Valley League title

The KYSA 12U American JBO baseball team, Keizer Celtics, took first place in the Valley League to advance to the JBO District Tournament being held in Albany Thursday through Sunday. The Celts beat Central twice in a double header Tuesday, July 2, to take the first place seed in the district tournament.   Erik Barker hit a walk off double in the sixth inning to win the first game.  Jaidyn Jackson was the winning pitcher, allowing a single run on four hits with four strike outs. Alex Simpson and Erik Barker also pitched.   Pitchers in the second game were Luke Miller, Noah Lelack and Erik Barker. The team batted .357 in the double header. Barker went 3-for-4 with two doubles, Luke Miller 3-for-4, Jacob Haller and Drew Bartlett 2-for-4, Jaidyn Jackson 2-for-5 and Riley Flores, Nigel Harris and Jamison Martin all produced hits for the team.  Strong play in the outfield by Nigel Harris and Jamison Martin alongside outstanding catching from Brandon Reed helped clinch the wins. Everett puts Salem-Keizer into losing skid

By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes July 2: Boise 10,  Volcanoes 5 A four-run first inning and home runs in the fifth and ninth made the visiting Hawks the winners of the three-game series. It was expected to be Paul Blackburn’s night, but after three scoreless innings, the Volcanoes revised his earned run average from zero. A third-inning single by Sam Eberle scored Randy Ortiz and Tyler Hollick, Shilo McCall singled Elliott Blair home, and Boise’s lead was cut to 4-3. Orbandy Rodriguez came in to pitch the fourth and retired Salem-Keizer in order. David Bote hit a solo homer in the fifth, but the Volcanoes came back with one in the sixth. Boise scored twice in the eighth, and Jacob Rogers hit a three-run homer in the ninth. Rodriguez was the winning pitcher, with Tyler Bremer getting a save. Starter Joe Kurrasch was the loser. July 3: Volcanoes 11,  Boise 3 The bats of Sam Eberle and Tyler Hollick and the arm of Reyes Moronta finally reminded the Hawks of what Salem-Keizer can do. For the Volcanoes, the big inning was the seven-run second. Eberle led off with the first of two home runs in the game. Shilo McCall and Elliott Blair walked, and John Polonius doubled them home.
