It may have started small, but leaders with the Keizer Community Library hope a summer reading program takes off.
Laura Bindley, director of the Keizer Community Library, spoke at Monday’s Keizer City Council meeting along with Arturo Vargas, coordinator for Marion County Reading for All Initiative.
Mayor Lore Christopher signed a proclamation calling for this summer to be the “Summer of Reading in the City of Keizer.”
Vargas emphasized the need for children to be reading in the summer.
“We know that during the summer children don’t spend time reading, because it is summer,” Vargas said. “Research says kids who don’t read in the summer lose knowledge. If children do read, when they go back to school, they are ready to learn.”
