To the Editor:

We attended the part of the Keizer City Council meeting where they passed the resolution to name the new little park at Keizer Station after our friend Shawna Fenison’s son PFC Ryan J. Hill, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007.

We were not only moved to tears by Shawna’s public testimony, but especially by the gracious and tender response on the part of the mayor (who got up to give Shawna a hug—mom to mom—and councilors, particularly Ken LeDuc, himself the father of a soldier, who offered Shawna his Corvette in the Iris Festival Parade.

The standing ovation given to Ryan was not only fitting and patriotic, but touched us in a deeper way. We are sad that such a promising life was cut so short, but grateful for the spirit of volunteerism and service that he exemplified. The new park name is perfect, and Ryan would get such a kick out of it.
