German students get taste of life at McNary

By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes For the past two weeks, a group of German students has been visiting McNary High School, but the students’ preparation for the trip actually began long before they arrived in the U.S. “We got to choose classes we wanted to sit in on from a huge master schedule before we came to visit,” said Katrin Hain. The trip is an annual program coordinated by the German-American Partnership Program. Each spring, students from Stuttgart, Germany, visit Keizer and each summer a contingent of McNary students visit Germany. McNary instructor John Mangan and his German counterpart Manfred Pfeiffer collaborate to make the trips happen. Twenty-one students are visiting McNary while another 19 are visiting West Salem High School. Simonka Place to be expanded

By CRAIG MURPHY Of the Keizertimes The need hasn’t stopped. As such, plans are moving forward to expand Simonka Place, the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) shelter at 5119 River Road N that serves homeless women and children. Simonka Place has a capacity of 50 beds. Since January 2012, the facility has been averaging more than 60 women and children a night. “It’s sad to see anyone in need of a safe and warm place to sleep denied shelter due to over capacity,” UGM president and CEO Mike Rideout said. “It’s even more difficult when that population is women and children.” Kyle Dickinson, vice president of advancement at UGM, said that led to a decision last fall to expand capacity at Simonka Place. The $695,000 project will add more than 4,400 square feet and boost capacity by 60 percent, to 82 beds.
