A string of business burglaries along Keizer’s main commercial strip have a few traits in common, police said last week.
The same person is suspected in at least seven break-ins between April 6 and May 5, striking these businesses:
• Society’s Child Salon at 3860 River Road N. Chen’s Dynasty at 5069 River Road N. and 911 Supply at 4484 River Road N., all on April 6.
• TIN Inc. at 4052 River Road N. on April 26
• Images Hair Salon at 5171 River Road N., Bronze Planet at 5159 River Road N. and Pro Nails at 5147 River Road N., all on May 5.
Kuhns said the targeted establishments all were in strip malls and the suspect tried to enter through a rear door sometime between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.
“He’s trying to use concealment to get in these businesses instead of just getting in the front door, or front window,” said Keizer Police Capt. Jeff Kuhns.
The burglar has been successfully breaking into businesses that don’t have deadbolts, Kuhns said, and has deduced how to defeat or break a typical lock on a handle.
“Deadbolts are very difficult to defeat, so if we can get people to start using those we’re going to reduce the likelihood of these burglaries,” Kuhns said.
And if someone does get in, Kuhns said empty cash registers should be left open so the suspect can see a till with no money inside – otherwise the register could get destroyed, he said.
A white male is suspected in the crimes. He was wearing dark-colored sweatshirt and pants, police said.
